Course Objectives 

English Composition I will drill USN Medical Lab Technician students (Balboa Naval Hospital) in thinking critically, organizing thoughts effectively, and expressing ideas clearly; course will give students practice in researching and writing short papers in MLA form.

Class Procedures  Class time is dedicated to discussing topics including the assigned reading, the movie Sgt. York, student essays, sentence structure, and MLA form, as well as writing-workshop. 

Text Reader provided by Vincennes: The Longman Reader, 6th Edition; Nadell, Langan, & Comordromos.

Essays

Students will write five 1,000-word essays for evaluation. The first essay (expository mode: narration) will treat the movie Sgt. York.  The next three essays will focus on visual analysis and will include elements of traditional expository modes: description, narration, persuasion, argumentation, comparison & contrast, and cause & effect. The fifth essay will be a short research paper on an assigned topic ("Black Death"). The final three of the five essays must employ MLA style documentation.

Preparation of Manuscripts
  • Work written in class will require 8 1/2x11 paper.
  • Write your name, date, and paper description in the upper right hand corner of the first page and, in the upper right-hand corner, write your name and page number on subsequent pages.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph.
  • Write on one side of the paper only. Write on every other line and leave adequate margins on both sides & between lines for comments and additions.
  • Papers must be neat, legible, and carefully written.
  • Homework must be typed in san serif (use Arial or Tahoma - not Times Roman) 18 pt.
Late Papers Late papers will receive a grade lowered by one letter grade. No late papers will be accepted one week after the due date unless approved by the instructor in advance.

Plagiarism Plagiarism is the act of using another person's words and ideas as if they were one's own. Any student who is found plagiarizing on a paper or who permits his own work to be copied will automatically receive an F for that paper.

Attendance Prompt attendance is required. If you are late because of duty, please bring a note of explanation. If you are required for duty and know before the class, you must inform the instructor by email that you are unable to attend and state the reason. Chief will be informed of all tardies and absenses.
